Abstract

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a leading cause of death worldwide. In 2018, NCDs’ prevalence had reportedly increased since 2013. Hypertension was the biggest cause of NCDs diagnosed in health facilities, from 25.8% to 34.1%. Patients with hypertension and obesity are at increased risk of complications from diabetes mellitus and kidney disease. Objective: The present study aimed to determine risk factors for obesity in patients aged 25–69 years with hypertension. Materials and Method: This was an observational study with a cross-sectional design, using secondary data from the ‘Cohort Study of Risk Factors of Non-communicable Diseases’, conducted in Bogor City, Kebon Kelapa Village in 2017. The population in this study included adult patients with hypertension aged 25–69 years. Results: The prevalence of obesity in patients with hypertension was 47.4%.Risk factors that were significantly related to obesity in patients with hypertension included age groups 25–44 and 45–59, female gender and excessive energy intake (p = 0.009, 0.050, 0.025 and 0.039, respectively and odds ratio = 2.43, 1.73, 1.85 and 1.85, respectively). Conclusions: Risk factors associated with obesity in patients aged 25–69 years with hypertension included age, gender and energy intake.
