Assessment of Nicotine Dependence Using Fagerstrom Tolerance Scale among Tobacco Chewers and Smokers

Aim: To assess the level of nicotine dependence using Fagerstrom tolerance to nicotine dependence
questionnaire among tobacco chewers and smokers.
Materials and Method: About 30 participants were included in the study and divided into two groups
in which 15 had the habit of using smokeless tobacco and 15 were smokers. Fagerstrom Tolerance to
Nicotine Dependence (FTND) questionnaire was given to the participants which has a scoring points
for their answers through which level of nicotine dependence is assessed.
Results: The overall score for nicotine dependence when compared between the two groups the result
was statistically significant.
Conclusion: The level of nicotine dependence helps to plan for the treatment and also motivate the
tobacco users to quit the habit.
