Junk food Consumption Pattern by Undergraduate Students of Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra

Background -Junk food is the food that can easily and quickly prepared, rich in calories but deficient in
most of nutrients. Due to increased urbanization, globalization and commercial advertisements as well as
abundant junk food outlets, college going students are getting indulge in eating these types of food. In recent
researches, it is clear that fast food is the one of the reasons for metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes
and heart diseases etc. Present survey was there fore conducted to check the consumption pattern of junk
food by university students of Dayalbagh Educational Institute.
Methodology–Among all the university undergraduate students,198 undergraduate students (68 boys and
130 girls) were randomly selected and assessed by self-administration of structured questionnaire.
Results and Conclusion – Present study revealed that about 51% students regularly consume fried/high
fat food in the form of kachori, samosa, pizza, pasta, chole bhature etc. and almost 31% students regularly
consume high sugar-based food like cold drinks, ice-cream, donuts, pastries and cakes etc. Most of the
students revealed that taste of fast food is the sole reason for consumption of fast food. Present study also
revealed that about 23% students were having adequate knowledge about effect of fast-food consumption
on health whereas 42% students was having inadequate knowledge about ill effect of fast-food consumption
on health. It is therefore necessary to create awareness about ill effects of fast food and benefits of balanced
diet to the college going students.
